On May 8th, 1945, Soviet troops fought their way into German’s capital Berlin, and Hitler the leader of Nazis committed suicide in his underground bunker, which led to the victory of Allied side. In Asia region, Japan was the only Axis Powers nation left to defeat. Even though Japan was standing alone, they still decided to follow the Bushido Code and refused to surrender. Surprisingly, scientists announced that they had already invented a new powerfully destructive weapon, and it is going to end the war immediately.
On August 6th, 1945, President of United States Harry Truman chose to drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a mid-sized city in Japan. Finally, after the second bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japanese emperor Hirohito forced the government to surrender, the World War ? ended. Dropping the atomic bombs is necessary to end the war faster and without any risks. According to Document A, “Memoirs of Secretary of War Henry L.
Stimson”: “Japanese military strength as follows: in the home islands, slightly under 2,000,000; in Korean, Manchuria, China proper, and Formosa, slightly over 2,000,000…The total strength of the Japanese Army was estimated at about 5,000,000 men. ” Apparently, Japan held a strong military power and overspread its troops all over the Asia region. For Americans, they would have to face the whole Asia continent instead of just Japan’s mainland, if President Truman chose to fight with Japan without using of atomic bombs.
Japan is a very developed industrialized nation. Everything, cars, bikes, guns, bullets, tanks and much more. Industry is mainly supporting not just the whole Japanese daily life but also the military force. From Document B Memoirs of General H. H. Arnold, Commander of the American Army Air Force in the Second World War: “We had hit some 60 Japanese cities…had destroyed most of the Japanese industries…made it impossible for Japan to carryon a large-scale war…” Stopping their supplies is a right way in order to shut down Japan’s military powers.
According to President Truman’s radio speech, Document H: “…We have used it(atomic bomb) in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans…” The battle between U. S and Japan involved in both sides, uncountable soldiers lost their lives during the war. For America, this price is too heavy to pay after America already went into Europe’s battles, the only way to abridge the cost of this war is atomic bomb, destructive and cruel, which is going to make Japan loses its will immediately.
